LOCATION:  Michigan State University (MSU), founded in 1855, is located in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. Michigan is in the northern part of the American Midwest, surrounded on three sides by the Great Lakes. East Lansing is adjacent to the state capital, Lansing, and is a short drive to major business and manufacturing centers, such as Chicago and Detroit, as well as to wildlife preserves, sandy beaches, and farmlands. Lansing is a major manufacturing hub for General Motors, the world’s leading automotive company, whose products include the new Cadillac CTS, described as the best car ever made in America. East Lansing is a vibrant and diverse “international” community offering the amenities and advantages of being located in the educational, technological, cultural, industrial, and political center of the state.

AN MSU FIRST: Founded in 1855, MSU was a pioneer for a new model of education: access to higher education for all people, not just for the elite. It blended practical education in the areas of agriculture and mechanical arts with traditional liberal arts. This new approach to higher education was a driving force in shaping the model for much of what public higher education is today in the United States. MSU's bold new approach helped provide the basis for the Morrill Act of 1862, passed by Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln.  Through large grants of federal land, this act funded the creation of "land-grant" universities like MSU throughout the United States.

In return for government support, land-grant institutions assumed a special obligation to serve the needs of the general public. The focus of land-grant universities today extends far beyond agriculture and engineering to such fields as health, human relations, business, communication, education, government, and urban development. Today, MSU's mission can best be described as “world-grant” as the university combines its traditional commitment to enhancing the prosperity and quality of life with extending its good work around the globe fostering international goodwill by advancing knowledge. MSU Faculty are engaged in research, development projects, and activities in more than 70 countries world-wide. MSU now brings to Dubai its traditions of exceptional education, practical research and problem solving, and outreach into communities.

MSU TODAY:  MSU is one of the largest and most comprehensive teaching and research universities in the United States and the world.  It has 17 degree-granting colleges with more than 200 programs of study.  More than 46,000 students are enrolled on the East Lansing campus, including over 7,000 post-graduate and professional students. MSU has 461,000 living alumni and over 30,000 international alumni, some of whom live in the Middle East and the United Arabs Emirates.  Its East Lansing campus is among the largest single university campuses anywhere with approximately 5,200 hectares in one contiguous block and an additional 2,100 hectares in other locations.

MSU is consistently recognized as one of the premier research universities in the world.  It is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities which extends membership only to the strongest of research institutions.  It is consistently ranked as one of the world's top 100 research universities by a variety of prestigious rankings. In coming to Dubai, MSU brings the power of world-leading research, practical innovation, and knowledge creation.
