Brendan MullanThinking globally is at the heart of MSU’s dedication to forming partnerships with institutions around the world that share our commitment to enhance education, health, agriculture, business, and technology. As the world grows smaller, the university’s reputation as a leader—and sought-after partner—in international academia, research, and economic development becomes ever more vital.

Michigan State University is extending its international reach and its reputation as a globally engaged university offering world-class academics with the opening of MSU in Dubai this fall.

The first major North American research university with a presence in the Dubai International Academic City, Michigan State offers students from the region the opportunity to attend a top research university and also opens doors to academic and research partnerships.

“For the first time, we’ve launched a full-fledged presence to deliver a full-capacity research and teaching presence in another country,” says Brendan Mullan, executive director of MSU in Dubai. “What we’re doing is path breaking in every way.”

Mullan says MSU’s excellent record of providing general education and liberal learning is what sets it apart in Dubai. Students receive the same quality education available at the East Lansing campus, accompanied by a strong research component that will engage them in faculty research.

“Taking responsibility for one’s own education and to explore and experiment with the learning process is taken for granted by college students in the United States, but is really valued in Dubai,” says Mullan.

MSU in Dubai also serves as a vehicle to engage the state of Michigan and its economic interests with the Middle East. As major Michigan corporations explore expansion into the Middle East, MSU’s presence provides an instant connection and support in the region.

A formal public announcement in November marked the opening of MSU’s Dubai campus. More than 200 dignitaries, VIPs, and guests were in attendance, including President Lou Anna K. Simon, several members of the MSU Board of Trustees, and senior representatives of the government of Dubai.
