While the Mission Statement has remained unchanged since 1982, it is revisited periodically as MSU develops vision, values, and goal statements to guide the institution. The current strategic planning process, Boldness by Design, was launched by President Lou Anna K. Simon in September 2005. It affirms the current mission statement and establishes an institutional goal, commitments, imperatives, and values to guide the implementation of the mission:

Our Institutional Goal

Michigan State University expands the horizons of possibility for humanity through the pursuit of knowledge, discovery, engagement, and opportunities to apply knowledge to improve the world.

Our Strategic Imperatives

  • Enhance the student experience – by continually improving the quality of academic programs and the value of an MSU degree for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Enrich community, economic, and family life – through research, outreach, engagement, entrepreneurship, innovation, and diversity.
  • Expand international reach – through academic, research, and economic development initiatives and global, national, and local strategic alliances.
  • Increase research opportunities – significantly expanding research funding and involvement of graduate and undergraduate students in research and scholarship.
  • Strengthen stewardship – by appreciating and nurturing the university’s financial assets, campus infrastructure, and people for optimal effectiveness today and tomorrow.

MSU Dubai Mission and Vision Statement

MSU Dubai is a bold extension of the University’s commitment to internationalization. Its creation as an educational site that offers degree programs from five different colleges represents a truly interdisciplinary initiative and is evidence of the University’s determination to sustain teaching, research, outreach and engagement activities in the Gulf Region.

Planning for MSU Dubai included input from colleges, departments, and administrative units across the campus. More than 200 individuals from the East Lansing campus played an active role in making the MSU Dubai project a reality.

In the Middle East, MSU Dubai contributes to the larger MSU mission by advancing knowledge and transforming lives. Through our campus in Dubai we will:

  • Provide a world class education and experiences.
  • Conduct regionally-based scholarship and research.
  • Engage meaningfully with communities throughout the region.

MSU Dubai will be recognized as a top teaching and research university in the Middle East.
